Opening Exhibit: Contemporary Paintings from ChinaApril 29 - June 10
The opening exhibit is a group show featuring paintings by thirteen artists from China. While many of these artists have participated in exhibitions in Asia and Europe, this is their first time exhibiting in the United States.
In the exhibit, the artists focus on a broad array of issues produced by current conditions in China. The period after the Cultural Revolution resulted in rapid urbanization, a sudden shift from the collective to the individual mindset, and access to western art that had previously been denied. The artists engage with these changes and explore themes such as the isolation of the individual in modern society, the persistence of Chinese culture in the face of widespread change, and the ever-changing Chinese landscape.
