Jin Ke, Night on Route 175 VI, 2013, oil and acrylic on canvas, 43” × 23.5”
Night on Route 175 VI depicts the construction of the Three Gorges Dam located in Hubei province. The dam helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions; however, the construction of the dam also caused many historical buildings to be ruined or moved. The mixed results associated with the dam mirror the artist’s mixed views on urbanization. While on the one hand he believes the changes associated with urbanization are exciting, he’s also concerned with the conflict between urbanization and traditional landscapes. The artist also worries about the effects on individuals, because he believes living in the city causes people to become impatient, lonely, and materialistic.
Jin Ke was born in Chongqing and graduated from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1998. He later attended Chongqing University and graduated with a Master’s degree in 2002. Some of his recent exhibits include the Celebrate Hong Kong Art Exhibition and the Golden Oil Painting Exhibition in Chongqing. The artist has received awards including the China Star Art Competition Gold Award and the 10th Eastern China Awards Art Design Exhibition Bronze Award. Jin currently lives and works in Chongqing.
